Buddy Mayer

Beatrice “Buddy” Cummings Mayer (1921–2018) was a visionary philanthropist, art collector, and advocate for social change. A Chicago native, Buddy was deeply committed to supporting the arts, education, and social justice, leaving an indelible mark through her generosity and leadership. As the daughter of Nathan Cummings, founder of the Nathan Cummings Foundation, she continued her family’s legacy of philanthropy, playing a significant role in shaping the foundation’s impact on progressive causes.

Buddy had a profound love for the arts, collecting an extensive array of modern and contemporary works and championing artists throughout her life. Her passion for creativity extended beyond collecting; she believed in the power of the arts to inspire and drive social change. This dedication was evident in her support for arts institutions and emerging artists, ensuring that creative expression remained accessible and influential.

Beyond the art world, Buddy was a steadfast advocate for economic and social justice. She dedicated her resources to advancing women’s rights, environmental sustainability, and democratic values. Her philanthropy was deeply personal—she invested in causes that aligned with her strong moral compass and belief in building a more just and equitable society.

Buddy’s legacy continues through initiatives like the WNC Futures Fund, which embodies her spirit of generosity and forward-thinking impact. Inspired by her lifelong commitment to helping communities thrive, the fund supports projects that foster opportunity, resilience, and sustainable development in Western North Carolina. Her life’s work serves as a guiding light, reminding us all of the power of philanthropy to create meaningful and lasting change.
