2025 Focus Area:
Trail to Recovery
Overview
In response to the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene on Western North Carolina, the WNC Futures Fund invites proposals for the "Trail to Recovery" grant program. This initiative aims to help restore the region’s trails and integrate mental health support, fostering community recovery through nature’s restorative power.
Trails in WNC are vital for outdoor recreation, community connection, and mental well-being. Tragically, the storm caused widespread damage, rendering many trails inaccessible. This program seeks nonprofit partners to implement innovative projects that address both trail restoration and mental well-being, creating sustainable pathways to healing and resilience.
Program Goals
-
Repair damage caused by Hurricane Helene, including clearing debris, stabilizing landslides, and rebuilding trails.
Prioritize inclusivity by creating wheelchair-accessible paths and sensory-friendly zones where possible.
-
Integrate therapeutic programs from mental health organizations, such as mindfulness hikes, guided meditation, and community-building activities on restored trails.
-
Create inclusive initiatives that combine trail restoration with mental health wellbeing, reinforcing the connection between nature and well-being.
Eligible Activities
Invited nonprofit organizations are encouraged to propose initiatives that align with the program’s vision. While the following examples illustrate potential approaches, applicants are encouraged to innovate and tailor their proposals to their unique strengths and community needs. Proposals may include but are not limited to:
Partnerships for Restoration-Centered Programs: Collaborate with mental health organizations to integrate counseling sessions with trail restoration projects.
Trail Ambassadors Program: Train community members to oversee trail maintenance and provide peer mental health support.
Therapeutic Volunteer Days: Combine trail repair efforts with stress-relief exercises led by mental health professionals.
Restoration and Wellness Retreats: Blend trail restoration tasks with workshops like yoga, art therapy, or mindfulness practices.
Educational Programs: Engage schools and families in hands-on trail repair while teaching environmental stewardship and mental health resilience.
